LISTEN TO WHAT OUR HAPPY MARTIAL ART STUDENTS AND PARENTS ARE SAYING
I had studied taekwondo back in high school but hadn't kept up with it. I had very warm memories of my time with the ATA, though, so when my son was 7 I decided to check out ATA Madison West. It was such a great experience that I signed back up as well, and convinced my wife and daughter to join too! ATA Madison West is a very friendly and supportive environment, with awesome students and instructors. Everyone works together to help each other achieve their best, so it's a great place to start even if you have no martial arts experience. While the school is privately owned, it is part of the ATA (formerly American Taekwondo Association) which is one of the largest taekwondo organizations in the U.S. This was a huge advantage to me because the curriculum is consistent from school to school. Even if you end up moving somewhere else, you'll likely be near another ATA school and can pick up exactly where you left off. (My high school studies were in North Carolina 20 years ago!) Fantastic school, fantastic people. Great place to train yourself physically and mentally, and learn some self-defense to boot!
Wonderful school and instructors. Lifeskills, compassion and physical fitness all in one space!
Yes, yes, yes! After having a terrible experience up the road with a different Taekwondo establishment, I know we found our home. Buyer beware of a place that pushes past accolades, or their father's past accolades. We had experience with a different ATA organization before we moved here, and I wish we had sought out ATA again. Instead, we found a place close to home and the difference is night and day. ATA focuses on character development, real skills, encouraging kids and preventing bullying. The other place focused on money. If you have any doubts, please just try ATA West. We actually got started here through a Groupon, and I am so glad we did. My 7 year old came home tonight asking me what he could do to learn more about self-discipline. He has committed to caring for our dog and running nightly clean-ups-encouraging the whole family to do this. He wants to show us that he can take initiative and do these things without being reminded. I have no doubt he will follow through. This is why I love the ATA program. It is holistic and truly helps your child develop virtues that serve them for a life time.

This program offers children a strong foundation in essential character qualities such as courtesy, respect, and discipline. In addition, the program is designed to improve children’s motor skills and enhance their ability to pay attention and follow directions. All classes are taught using the most safe, fun, and exciting instruction methods for this age group. In other words, every child is a winner in this program, regardless of physical ability.
Our belt/rank systems include 9 color belts or “grades” and 9 levels of black belts or “degrees”. The color belts, in order from beginner to advanced student, are white, orange, yellow, camouflage, green, purple, blue, brown, red. The kids programs add in special half ranks (animal pattern belts for ATA Tigers and black-striped belts for the Karate for Kids). There is a transitional rank, recommended 1st degree black belt rank, signified by a half-red/half-black belt. Then, the black belt ranks ranging from 1st degree to 9th degree. More details on our ranking system can be found on the ATA Martial Arts international website.
Established in 1996. We started as a small martial arts club teaching out of Harbor House Apartments (now Harbor House Condos). We have taught out of a few different West-side Madison locations over the years (Premier Dance Academy, Supreme Health and Fitness, Elver Park Neighborhood Center, and Point of Grace Church). Through the years we have provided excellent “family style” martial arts training to kids and adults focusing on improving life skills and helping each student achieve success in all areas of their lives. We have always welcomed ethnically diverse students of ALL abilities and have adapted material for people with various physical and/or mental challenges.

A Message From Our Owner Steve Allison
I truly believe there is no better activity for you mentally and physically than martial arts. It is fun, life-long endeavor which helps everyone stay active while keeping their mind engaged. I look forward to sharing these benefits with you and your family soon.
I took my first martial arts class in college and immediately loved it. I was not able to train regularly until I moved to Madison for graduate school in 1992. I have trained since then and started teaching in 1995 after entering the instructor training program. In addition to Taekwondo, I have studied a little bit of Aikido and various weapons systems. My next goals are to earn my 6th degree black belt and then the title of Master Instructor.
- 1992 – Started training/studying ATA Taekwondo
